Scope/Impact: The PIC will direct professional pharmacists, technicians, and support personnel in completing a variety of assignments, such as prescription entry, interpretation and review of prescriptions, drug utilization review, prescriber calls, issue resolution, and filling prescriptions. Follows policies, procedures, and departmental objectives.
Job Functions
- Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders; detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.
- Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
- Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions, consults with nurses and physicians regarding questions
- Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians’ work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.
- Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies.
- Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by monitoring nursing unit inspections; maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions.
- Maintains records of all transactions of the Pharmacy as necessary to ensure accurate control over and accountability for all drugs as required by applicable state and federal laws and regulations.
- Maintains inventory and stock levels consistent with Pharmacy goals and manufacturer protocols.
- Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.
- Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Assures that all pharmaceuticals are in-date and meet official USP or NF standards. Follows recall protocols.
- Follows department policies, procedures, and practices consistent with CCMC policies, safety guidelines, and the Legal Compliance Policy Program and Medicare requirements and assures the proper use and control of every medication used in the medical center.
- Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis. Properly disposes of personal health information.
- Participates in Patient Assistance and Quality Assurance programs as directed.
- Submits appropriate claims for third-party reimbursement.
- Be aware of 340B program and policies and procedures for CCMC.
- Complete 340B University upon hire.
- MedAssist Plan- Know details of program, use and documentation required.
- Interacts with patients, medical staff, nursing personnel, and departments on a continuous basis.
- Administers immunizations and updates vaccination schedules and patient information (VIS sheets) from the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
- Checks the state prescription drug monitoring program as required by state board and ensures records are uploaded as required.
- Ensures that hazardous waste drugs are properly handled and disposed of according to USP regulations.
- Complies with legal requirements for pseudoephedrine sales.
- Complies with Medicare specific requirements for dispensing test strips, inhalation solution and other covered pharmaceutical products and includes proper documentation.
- Complies with Continuing Medical Education (CME) Fraud, Waste and Abuse.
- Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere and promotes teamwork and equality, embraces diversity.
License(s) / Certification(s) / Registration(s)
Required: Licensed by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy with an unrestricted license in the state of employment. Must be Immunization certified and maintain BLS/CPR certification
Education Required
Required: Graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the American College on Pharmaceutical Education with a Bachelor’s Degree. High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred: Doctorate – PharmD
