Manager – Respiratory Therapy

Scope/Impact

The Respiratory Manager will work under the direction of a physician. The manager plans, organizes and directs the provision of respiratory services for patients as ordered by a physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant per policies and procedure manual.

Job Functions

  • Initiates departmental policies, procedures, and practices consistent with hospital policy.
  • Resolves technical and administrative problems, such as scheduling/staffing issues, equipment malfunctions, issues with test results, or therapy and/or documented variances.
  • Directs and coordinates department budget preparation.
  • Develops, monitors, and revises respiratory care procedures to improve services or identify deficiencies and provides direction for correction.
  • Maintains cooperative working relationships with a variety of hospital personnel and physicians to resolve problems and to enhance delivery of services.
  • Provides quality assurance reports to the hospital Quality Assurance Committee.
  • Administers oxygen, aerosol therapy and EzPAP therapy.
  • Performs pulmonary function test.
  • Performs treadmill stress test and holter monitors.
  • Performs arterial punctures and analysis of arterial blood gases.
  • Performs ECG/EKG’s and prepares them for physician interpretation.
  • Places and supervises patients on ventilator, BiPAP/CPAP and vapotherm.
  • Perform secretion removal through various methods.
  • Follows aseptic procedures and procedures for using Universal Precaution when involved in direct patient contact or handling potentially infectious materials.
  • Discuss the condition and treatment of patients with the patient’s physician and respiratory staff and recommend changes in care when indicated.
  • Maintains stock supply, obtains necessary stock and assures equipment has preventive maintenance performed yearly.
  • Recommends equipment to be purchased or modification of existing equipment.
  • Responsible for following departmental policies, procedures, and practices consistent with hospital policy.
  • Monitors respiratory services to assure quality and seek improvements.
  • Assures compliance with federal, state, and other regulations or standards pertaining to respiratory operations.
  • Maintains confidentiality while working with confidential matters daily.
  • Provides service direct to patient while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.

Required: Registry or Certification as a CRT, RRT, Texas License for Respiratory Care Practitioner

BLS, ACLS, PALS

Education

Required: High School diploma or equivalent

Graduate of a program approved by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)

Amount and Type of Experience

Required: Two years of experience as a Certified / Registered Respiratory Therapist

Critical care experience

Preferred: Two years Supervisory experience
