Scope/Impact

Answers emergency calls.  Determines nature and extent of illness or injury, or magnitude of catastrophe, to establish first aid procedures to be followed or need for additional assistance, basing decisions on statements of persons involved, examination of victim or victims, and knowledge of emergency medical practice providing maximum patient comfort according to appropriate skill level.  Relays pertinent information to dispatcher concerning patient condition and maintains necessary patient records of ambulance service.  Operates and maintains emergency vehicles and equipment in optimum condition.

Job Functions

  • Drives and operates ambulance and other emergency vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Follows safety procedures assuring safe and proper transfer of the sick or injured patient medical facilities or pre-determined destination.
  • Keeps ambulance and equipment in optimum operating condition by cleaning and checking to insure safe and efficient operation of vehicle and equipment.
  • Notifies supervisor of needed maintenance.
  • Assist in removing sick and injured patients from various difficult positions and situations using prudent methods, always considering patient’s injuries and danger of situation.
  • Administers first aid to sick and injured patient in accordance with prudent first aid techniques and degree of training in compliance with hospital protocols.
  • Safely administer medications or treatments in compliance with license, certification and skill level.
  • Assess and diagnose patient in compliance with level of license, certification, and appropriate skill level.
  • Reassures patient and is attentive to patient’s rights and religious beliefs.
  • Assesses and interprets data on neonate and the pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patient’s requirements relative to their age-specific needs and provides care needed as stipulated in departmental policy.
  • Obtains, when possible, pertinent patient information by interviewing and by observing and evaluating patient’s condition and relays information to dispatcher or emergency room by radio in order that information may be passed on to the medical facility.
  • Maintains dispatching records by recording information required by dispatching form in order to provide an accurate record of activity.
  • Obtains patient information necessary for billing.
  • Restocks after each call to ensure adequate supplies.
  • Routinely verifies supplies are not expired and equipment is in proper operation condition.
  • Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
  • Follows safety guidelines and policies for the Medical Center.
  • Abides by Legal Compliance Policy Program of the Medical Center.

License(s) / Certification(s) / Registration(s)

Required:   Current certification by the Texas Department of Health as an Emergency Medical Technician. Current Driver’s License. Training in a Texas Department of Health certified program.    BLS required.

Preferred: ACLS, PALS.

Education Required

Required:   High School graduate or equivalent.  EMT.

Amount and Type of Experience

Required:  Verbal and written communication skills.  Familiarity with operation of emergency care.  One year working in an emergency medical environment.
