Scope/Impact
Performs rapid, initial assessments of patients received in the Emergency Room. Implements appropriate life-saving interventions as provided for by the state nursing practice act and CCMC policies and procedures. Monitors patients’ responses to resuscitative efforts. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes. Communicates with other team members and families of trauma patients. Serves as a patient advocate.
Job Functions
- Fosters a positive work environment in which the ER staff are able to function to their highest ability in providing excellent patient care.
- Provides leadership to other team members to promote effective performance and quality nursing care to create an outstanding patient experience.
- Utilizing the nursing process, completes a comprehensive physical and psychosocial assessment of patient, completing a triage, admission assessment and discharge assessment on every patient.
- Provides nursing care as outlined in the nursing care and medical plans of care, and documents observations and interventions in accordance with CCMC policies and procedures.
- Gives exchange reports to other health care personnel providing accurate and complete information on each patient.
- Administers medication according to policy including IV’s, blood and blood components as prescribed by the physician.
- Knows actions, indications, contraindications, precautions, adverse reactions, dosage and route of administration on all drugs before administering to patient.
- Communicates patient needs and progress to other members of the health care team to ensure coordination of care and interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Assists with, and documents on paper and in electronic medical record, completes medication reconciliation, patient teaching, discharge instructions, and distribution of teaching materials.
- Maintains accurate and timely records per CCMC policy and procedures.
- Demonstrates an understanding and commitment to maintaining an environment that assures all customers, all individuals, are treated with dignity and respect.
- Upholds all HIPAA and other confidentiality policies and practices as well as complies with all legal compliance policies of CCMC.
- Cleans and stocks ED as assigned.
- Maintains required certifications.
- Communicates with CNO and Nurse Manager.
- Perform any other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.
License(s) / Certification(s) / Registration(s)
Required: Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas. BLS, ACLS, must obtain TNCC within 6 months of employment.
Preferred: PALS, ENPC, CEN – preferred.
Education Required
Required: Graduate of an accredited School of Professional Nursing. High school diploma or equivalent
Amount and Type of Experience
Required: One year’s experience as a Registered Nurse in a hospital required. Must pass basic EKG test, (ICU and telemetry).
Preferred: ICU and ER experience preferred.
