Pharmacist

Scope/Impact

Serves patients by preparing medications; giving pharmacological information to multidisciplinary health care team; monitoring patient drug therapies for patients of the medical center.  Follows policies, procedures, and departmental objectives.

Job Functions

  1. Prepares medications by reviewing and interpreting physician orders; detecting therapeutic incompatibilities.
  2. Dispenses medications by compounding, packaging, and labeling pharmaceuticals.
  • Controls medications by monitoring drug therapies; advising interventions.
  1. Completes pharmacy operational requirements by organizing and directing technicians’ work flow; verifying their preparation and labeling of pharmaceuticals; verifying order entries, charges, and inspections.
  2. Provides pharmacological information by answering questions and requests of health care professionals; counseling patients on drug therapies.
  3. Develops hospital staff’s pharmacological knowledge by participating in clinical programs; training pharmacy staff, students, interns, externs, residents, and health care professionals.
  • Complies with state and federal drug laws as regulated by the state board of pharmacy, the drug enforcement administration, and the food and drug administration by maintaining records for controlled substances; removing outdated and damaged drugs from the pharmacy inventory; supervising the work results of support personnel; maintaining current registration; studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; advising management on needed actions.
  • Protects patients and technicians by adhering to infection-control protocols.
  1. Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
  2. Maintains pharmacological knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  3. Contributes to team effort by coordinating interdepartmental relationships.
  • Assures that all pharmaceuticals are in-date and meet official USP or NF standards.
  • Follows department policies, procedures, and practices consistent with CCMC policies, safety guidelines, the Legal Compliance Policy Program and Medicare requirements and assures the proper use and control of every medication used in the medical center.
  • Maintains HIPAA required and all other confidentiality while working with confidential matters on a daily basis.
    1. Interacts with patients, medical staff, nursing personnel, and departments on a continuous basis.
  • Provides service direct to patients while maintaining a positive patient relations atmosphere.
  • Follows the policy and procedures for the CCMC 340B program and complies with all regulations related to this program to ensure the integrity is maintained.
  • Perform any other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

Required:  Licensed by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Education Required

Required: Graduate of a College of Pharmacy accredited by the American College on Pharmaceutical Education with a Bachelor’s Degree.  High school diploma or equivalent

Preferred: Doctorate – PharmD

Amount and Type of Experience

Required: One year experience in a pharmacy.

Preferred:  At least 40 hours training in IV preparation and aseptic technique.
